Bart Willoughby headlines Klub Koori – July 9

Legendary Aboriginal musician, Bart Willoughby, will headline this year’s Klub Koori NAIDOC week concert, taking place at Carriageworks in Sydney on the 9th of July.

Microwave Jenny, Leah Flanagan and Brenda Gifford will join Bart for a stellar evening of Indigenous entertainment, singing up their connections to land and country and giving honor to the 2015 NAIDOC theme, ‘Sacred Ground’.

Bart Willoughby is the man behind Indigenous anthems, ‘We Have Survived’, ‘Black Mans Rights’ and ‘Aboriginal Woman’. A Pitjantjaatjara man who grew up at the Kooniba Mission near Ceduna in South Australia, Bart first sprang to national attention in the 1980’s with pioneering Aboriginal band, ‘No Fixed Address’, blending reggae and rock with traditional Aboriginal influences.

After stints playing drums with bands ‘Coloured Stone’ and ‘Yothu Yindi’, in the early ‘90’s, Bart founded ‘Mixed Relations’. In 1992, he became the first Aboriginal person to compose, play and direct the score for a feature film (‘Jindalee Lady’), and in 1993, was the recipient of the ‘Indigenous ARIA Australian Music Award’, recognising his ‘Outstanding Contribution to Indigenous Music in Australia.’ He is considered to be among the most influential pioneers in contemporary Aboriginal music and continues to record and tour with ‘The Bart Willoughby Band’.

Now in its sixth year, Klub Koori is a regular event produced by Sydney’s only Aboriginal community radio station, Koori Radio (presented by the Gadigal Information Service). Klub Koori showcases live performances by Aboriginal artists and bands across a broad range of genres. In recent years, Koori Radio has partnered with Carriageworks to produce a special Klub Koori event each July to coincide with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Week of Celebration (NAIDOC).
