Australian jazz legends, Kevin Hunt and Johnny Nicol, accompanied by friends, treated listeners to an evening of truly world class musicianship atop the Koori Radio rooftop yesterday for the second in the community broadcasters burgeoning Rooftop Concert Series.

Playing a collection of classic jazz tunes, the ensemble were in fine form, with Mr. Nicol delivering his trademark  smooth vocals and virtuoso jazz guitar playing, while Kevin Hunt was at his typically brilliant best on keyboard. The chemistry between the ensemble was palpable as they expertly worked their way through a number of enthralling jazz grooves to an adoring crowd of over 100 people.

"Maybe it's because I'm Indigenous, but for me, there was a very special feeling up there on the rooftop, their's such a great vibe up there - it was a magical evening and one of the most enjoyable performances of my career,' says Johnny Nicol.

At one point in the evening, Mr. Nicol was joined on stage by wife, Barbara Flick-Nicol, and daughter, Emily Nicol, for a very special rendition of his original track, ‘Horseshoe Bay’.

Mrs. Flick-Nicol also officially opened the evening by paying respects to traditional owners, bringing attention to the significance of the gathering taking place in the heart of inner-Sydney’s Aboriginal community, pointing out that the Koori Radio studios stand above the grounds of the old Black Theatre Company, and within a stone’s throw of where Mr.Nicol was first discovered while playing guitar at John McColl’s boxing gym.

The Koori Radio Rooftop Concert Series are fundraising events to help keep Koori Radio on the air. More events are planned for later in the year, with the third event tentatively scheduled for October.
