The Australian Human Rights Commission will be giving evidence in the Parliamentary Inquiry into Racism, Hate and Violence directed at First Nations People.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss says there needs to be strong support for the inquiry to drive action against racism in Australia.
Speaking with Koori Radio News Commissioner Kiss says there needs to be more than a diagnosis from the findings of the inquiry and that the Australian Human Rights Commission support the call for the following protections:
- Government to legislate a national human rights act.
- The full embedding and implementation of UNDRIP into domestic law
- National Human Rights Framework
- Reforms to the Racial Discrimination act 1975 and support for First Peoples everyday experiences of racism in the community
In 2023 The Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs published its report on its inquiry into the application of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in Australia. Commissioner Kiss says two years later the Human Rights Commission is still waiting to hear back from the Federal Government with a response.
Submissions from the community for the Parliamentary Inquiry into Racism, Hate and Violence Directed at First Nations People are due Friday May 1st, 2026.
